Nebulae are spectacular clouds of interstellar gaseous hydrogen and other heavier atoms such as helium and silicon, known as Dust. Gas can turn into plasma as a result of the clouds becoming ionized due to radiation and heat released from the center of this nebula. This center is becoming a proto-star and will continue to attract all of the surrounding gas, an easy task because gas is incredibly light. We are able to distinguish nebulae so far into 5 categories: Emission, Reflection, Diffuse, Dark, and Planetary. Supernova’s are also considered to be a type of nebula, but like a Planetary Nebula, the two are different from the others because they are the result of the death of a star, not the birth of one.
(Pictured: Horsehead Nebula, a dark nebula within a larger emission nebula known as, Barnard 33, 1500 light years(ly) away from Earth. The dominance of pink in this nebula is a result of the surrounding hydrogen gas being ionized from many stars all forming in this region of space.)
